Celebrating 140 Years Gastonia, North Carolina
Gastonia is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. It is the second-largest Charlotte metro with Concord, NC being the first. Gastonia is a part of Gaston County and is located directly west of Charlotte.
Gastonia was incorporated as a town by the North Carolina General Assembly on January 26, 1877. The town was one mile square and had an estimated population of 140. Gaston County and Gastonia became an important textile manufacturing area and by 1923 the Gaston County had 103 mills leading the nation in combed cotton production. The strike of 1929 at the Loray Mill brought much attention to the area and has become possibly best known event in Gastonia’s history.
